Doctors Giving Back is currently working in the “forgotten land” of Ethiopia. We do much of our work in the Western part of Ethiopia known as the Benishangul-Gumuz region which borders Sudan. In this region, there is only One hospital for its almost One Million residents. The regional hospital, in the capital of Assosa, has only 2 doctors and 1 surgeon. Less than 1 in 5 children will reach the age of 5, and many of those who survive will be orphaned as most adults die from preventable diseases such as Malaria before the age of 40. The average annual income is less than $100 (USD) which makes this predominately rural region one of the poorest in the country.
